How to plant German chamomile flower?
The German chamomile plant is propagated by seeds.
Many farmers plant seeds directly in the field in early autumn,
Other farmers plant seeds in indoor beds in the fall,
Transplantation was performed about 4 weeks later.
Each method has its advantages and disadvantages.
The cost of planting seeds directly in the field is much lower than
the cost of setting up beds with thousands of plants and transplanting them one by one
(This is a labor-intensive practice).
On the other hand, direct seeding in the field is risky,
Because the grower cannot control the temperature and humidity levels during germination.
Thus, if conditions are not ideal, direct seeding may result in a low germination rate.
Finally, more weeds are usually produced by direct seeding.
Instead of transplanting, plants will be transplanted into clean fields and quickly cover the ground.
Therefore, transplanting does not allow weeds to develop and establish.
Hereby we introduce 2 ways of plant German chamomile:
1) Plant seeds indoors in a seedbed.
In early autumn, we fill a bed with potting mix.
Then plant 2-3 seeds in each individual pot in the seedbed, covered with a very thin layer of mixed soil.
In addition, about 21-28 ounces (0.6-0.8 kg) of seeds are needed for a large 5,381 square foot (500 square meter) seedbed,
To produce enough plants for one hectare (1 hectare =10,000 square meters =2.47 acres).
In all cases, the seeds must be placed on the surface and lightly covered with soil.
If we plant the seed 2 inches (5 cm) deep, it may not germinate at all.
We can also mix seeds with river sand (1 part seed to 10 parts river sand).
Some farmers cover seedbeds with plastic bags.
In any case, we need to adjust the temperature to 60-68°F (15-20°C).
Check the seedbed daily.
If the soil is dry, water it gently with a watering can.
The soil should be kept moist (but not wet); otherwise, the seeds will not germinate.
We can get rid of the plastic bags, move the beds to a sunny window,
But you can only do this after the seeds have started to germinate.
Then we continued to water the beds until the plants were ready to be transplanted.
Transplantation can be performed up to 4 weeks after sowing.
We should loosen the soil and smooth the surface of the field.
When transplanting seedlings, leave 8 to 10 inches (20 to 25 cm) apart from each other.
Let's press the soil around the roots a little bit.
Water carefully every other day, keeping the soil moist (but not wet) until the seedlings are growing well.
We should first plow the ground and loosen the soil.
Then, any weeds and small or large stones that may be present must be removed.
Lightly water the planting area and then plant the seeds.
You need 21 to 28 ounces (0.6 to 0.8 kilograms) of seed per hectare.
We can mix seeds with river sand (1 part seed to 10 parts river sand),
That way the seeds will stay in the field and won't be blown away by insects, wind, etc.
Because the seeds are so small, we have to put them on the surface,
Cover lightly with soil.
If we put them even 2 inches (5 centimeters) deep,
The seeds will not germinate.
We just lightly cover it with soil and irrigate it.
From now on, the key is to keep the soil moist, but not soggy.
Seeds should usually germinate within 2-3 weeks.
When the plant reaches a height of 2 inches (5 centimeters),
We might have to slim it down,
Leave 8 to 10 inches (20 to 25 centimeters) between them.
