Osmanthus fragrans seeds

Osmanthus is the customary name for many trees of the Chinese Melilotus genus. It represents the species Melilotus, also known as rock laurel. It is an evergreen shrub or small tree in the melilotaceae family. It has a hard and thin skin, long oval leaves with pointed ends. Peanut leaf fu, corolla quadrifid, small shape, its horticultural varieties, the most representative are golden laurel, silver laurel, red laurel and so on.

Osmanthus is one of the ten most famous flowers in China. As early as 2000 years ago, the cultivation of osmanthus began. Pucheng city in Fujian Province is one of the main producing areas of osmanthus. The growth of osmanthus flower needs a warm and humid climate, and there are certain requirements for sunshine intensity, too strong sunshine and shade are not conducive to the normal growth of osmanthus flower, usually 6-8 hours of sunshine is the best, so the growth area has good water and heat conditions, appropriate precipitation, soil is mostly yellow brown soil or yellow brown soil, vegetation is mainly subtropical broad-leaved forest type. The main propagation techniques of osmanthus flower include asexual propagation, cutting, grafting and layering propagation.

Osmanthus flower can be used for phlegm, cough and asthma, abdominal cold pain, amenorrhea and dysmenorrhea. "Pharmacology of Chinese Medicine" recorded the effect of osmanthus flower to eliminate bad breath, "Anhui Chinese Herbal Medicine" and "Zhejiang Medicinal plants" recorded the effect of osmanthus flower to treat stomach cold and abdominal pain, and also has the effect of treating phlegm and cough. In addition to medicinal value, osmanthus can also be processed for osmanthus cake edible, osmanthus cake has a long history, also known as double ninth cake, there are verses "the Mid-Autumn Festival and double ninth, and see the flower cake everywhere busy." In addition to the therapeutic value of osmanthus tree, but also has ornamental value, its tree posture is correct and elegant, the crown of the tree as a "group" shape, soft lines of the tree gives people a sense of stability and peace. Song Dynasty Xie MAO poem describes osmanthus is "green cloud cut leaves, low protection of yellow gold dust", Yuan Dynasty Gu Ying wrote "golden millet under the rain."

Morphological characteristics

Osmanthus is an evergreen tree or shrub, 3-5 meters high, up to 18 meters; The bark is grayish brown. Twigs yellowish brown, glabrous. Leaf blade leathery, elliptic, oblong, or elliptic lanceolate, 7-14.5 cm long, 2.6-4.5

cm wide, apex acuminate, base attenuate cuneate or broadly cuneate, entire margin or usually upper serrate, glandular points conjoined into small vesicles on both sides, median vein concave above, raised below, lateral

veins 6-8, up to 10 pairs, Concave at the top and raised below; The petiole is 0.8-1.2 cm long, up to 15 cm long, hairless.

Cymes clustered in leaf axils, or nearly broom-like, with many flowers in each axillary; Bracts broadly ovate, thick, 2-4 mm long, cuspate, glabrous; Pedicels slender, 4-10 mm long, glabrous; The flowers are extremely fragrant;

Calyx ca. 1 mm long, lobes slightly irregular; Corolla yellowish-white, light yellow, yellow or orange-red, 3-4 mm long, corolla tube only 0.5-1 mm long; The stamens are located in the middle of the corolla tube, the filaments

are very short, about 0.5 mm long, and the anthers are about 1 mm long. The pistil is about 1.5 mm long and the style is about 0.5 mm long. Fruit skew, oval, 1-1.5 cm long, purplish black. Flowering in September to early

October, fruit in March of the next year.

It has strong growth, strong branches, large leaf shape, rough leaf surface, dark green leaf color and orange-red color; There are medium growing, smooth leaf surface, leaf margin with serrated, flowers are milky white silver

laurel, and thick flowers, sweet fragrance; The growth potential is strong, the leaf surface is smooth, the leaf margin is sparse serrated or whole edge, the flowers are light yellow, the flowers are sparse, and the fragrance is light.

In addition to the flowering of the varieties listed above in autumn from September to October, it can also open once every 2 months or 3 months. Red cinnamon and four seasons cinnamon, fruit for purple black stone fruit,

commonly known as cinnamon. Osmanthus seedlings have obvious taproots and deep roots. Young roots light brown, old roots yellow brown.

Growing environment

Osmanthus is adapted to subtropical climates. It likes to be warm and moist. The average temperature in the planting area is 14-28℃, the average temperature in July is 24-28℃, the average temperature in January is above 0℃,

the minimum temperature is -13℃, and the optimal growth temperature is 15-28℃. Humidity is very important to the growth and development of osmanthus flowers, requiring the annual average humidity of 75%-85%, annual

precipitation of about 1000 mm, especially young and adult trees need more water when flowering, if the drought will affect flowering, strong sunshine and shade is unfavorable to its growth, generally require 6-8 hours of light

every day.

Osmanthus like warm, strong stress resistance, both high temperature, but also more cold resistance. Therefore, in China Qinling Mountains, Huaihe River south of the area can be overwintered. Osmanthus more like the sun, also

able to shade, in the full light of its branches and leaves grow lush, flowering dense, in the shade of the growth of sparse branches and leaves, flowers rare. If indoor potted plants in the north, it is especially necessary to pay

attention to sufficient light to facilitate growth and the formation of flower buds. Osmanthus flower is moist, avoid water, but also has a certain ability to withstand drought. The soil requirements of osmanthus flower is not too

strict, in addition to alkaline soil and low depression or too sticky, poor drainage soil, generally can grow, but the deep soil layer, loose fertile, good drainage of slightly acidic sandy loam is the most suitable. Osmanthus has a certain

resistance to chlorine, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen fluoride and other harmful gases, and has a strong ability to absorb dust, which is often used in cities and industrial and mining areas.

Osmanthus flowers are suitable for planting in ventilated and transparent places; Like a clean and ventilated environment, not resistant to smoke and dust hazards, often can not flower after damage; Fear of waterlogging water, if the

damage of waterlogging, the root will become black and rot, the leaf tip first scorched, then the whole leaf withered and fell off, leading to the death of the whole plant; Not very hardy, but compared to other evergreen broad-leaved

tree species, it is still a relatively hardy tree.

Propagation method

The main propagation techniques of osmanthus flower include asexual propagation, cutting, grafting and layering propagation.

sow

The osmanthus fruit is ripe in April and May, and can be harvested when the peel changes from green to purple black. Osmanthus seeds have a post-ripening effect, at least half a year of sand storage time, after harvesting, water pile

retting, remove pulp, put the seeds in a cool place to dry naturally, sand storage, sand storage can be sown in autumn or spring. Check frequently during sand storage to prevent the seeds from rotting or being damaged by rats.

The method of seeding and propagation is generally adopted. The ground should be well prepared before sowing, and the base fertilizer should be applied. It can also be sown in the indoor seedbed. Place the seed umbilical side when

sowing, so as not to bend the radicle and young stem, which will affect the growth of seedlings in the future. After sowing, cover with a thin layer, and then cover with grass, shade and moisturizing, often keep the soil moist, and seedlings

can emerge in the year. The seed amount per mu is about 20 kg, and it can produce about 30,000 seedlings. The seedlings grow in the seedling bed for 2 years, and can be transplanted for cultivation in the third year. Seedling flowering is

late, 8-10 years after planting.
